Feira Hippie was born at Praça da Liberdade in 1969, when artists and artisans from Minas Gerais gathered there. Recognized by the Belo Horizonte City Hall in 1973, it moved to Avenida Afonso Pena in 1991 and became part of the city's cultural identity.
Feira Hippie de BH Conceived by a group of artists and art critics from Minas Gerais, this fair began at Praça da Liberdade in 1969. Visual artists and artisans of many crafts gathered there to show and sell their work. In 1973 it was recognized and made official by the Belo Horizonte City Hall. In 1991, Feira Hippie (the affectionate name locals and visitors gave to the craft fair at Praça da Liberdade) and other craft fairs around the city were brought together and moved to Avenida Afonso Pena, in downtown Belo Horizonte, creating the largest open-air craft fair in Latin America. The new fair, officially named Feira de Artes, Artesanato e Produtores de Variedades da Avenida Afonso Pena, inherited the affectionate name Feira Hippie from the old fair at Praça da Liberdade. During this period of reopening, the fair takes place between Rua Guajajaras and Praça Sete, and the food area remains on Rua Espírito Santo, between Avenida Afonso Pena and Rua dos Carijós.
